Every Saturday from October 16th to November 20th, 2021 (six sessions)

If you are interested in trail running but just not sure how to start or where to go,  join us for our first Introduction to Trail Running Clinic. This is a six-week beginner trail running clinic ending just in time for you to run the Prairie Inn Harriers’ Gunner Shaw 10km race (scheduled on Saturday, November 27) and/or the Stewart Mountain 8.8/16km race (scheduled on Sunday, December 5). Even if you aren’t interested in racing, this clinic can provide an excellent base to begin your own trail running adventures. Plus, you will discover some of the wonderful trail runs that we have right at our doorstep.

Prerequisites: We hope that when you join us you are comfortable running for about an hour (any pace!) and that you have a sense of adventure. We love to get out in the parks and splash in the fall rain and mud!

Run Format: Each week we will meet on Saturday at 8:00am from a different CRD park in the Greater Victoria Region for a trail run. Each runner will need to plan their own transportation to and from each run, though we may be able to assist in finding a carpool! A schedule will be provided upon registration to help with planning.

Runners will be divided into pace groups, to ensure that they can comfortably complete the runs safely and in a timely manner. There will be a shorter and a longer course each week for the different groups. You can plan to be out on the trail for one to two hours (8am -10am) but remember that the trails always hold surprises!

We will have experienced trail run leaders who will lead and sweep the groups to ensure that everyone stays on route. As we build confidence over the six week period, the runs will build in distance and technical demands.

Instruction: To get us started on the right foot, our first week will feature a run and a trail basics workshop with Matt Cecill. Matt is an accomplished trail runner and endurance running coach.

In addition, throughout the clinic we will host quick chats either before the run or on the trail to cover all things basic trail running, such as: differences from road running, safety on the trails, the 10 essentials, proper gear, descending/climbing, trail etiquette, and nutrition.

COVID Measures: We will be respecting any relevant COVID-measures put in place by the Public Health Officer and taking guidance from BC Athletics. For the safety of all our participants and volunteer run leaders, you will be asked to show your BC Vaccine Card and a piece of government photo ID at the start of the clinic. As of October 24th, two doses will be required.

Trail Running Gear: You do not have to have trail shoes to join but they are definitely an asset, especially as we build to longer and more technical routes. Running shoes with good tread will help on slippery terrain and rocks. You definitely do not want to wear your clean road shoes - unless you don’t mind getting them dirty! Think mud and water!

We also encourage runners to carry nutrition and hydration and to be prepared to run in all types of conditions and weather.

T-Shirts: Clinic shirts will be optional and available to order.
